Product Description

Low dust EBC Redstuff is a superb pad for fast street use and targets high HP imports, muscle cars and prestige European cars. EBC Redstuff ceramic pads reduce dust emitted by OEM pads by approx 80 percent. Redstuff pads also reduce rotor wear so that rotors and pads last longer whilst delivering great brake performance. For optimum lifetime in track use EBC still recommend drivers to upgrade to their Yellowstuff or even the new Bluestuff range but if fast street is what you need, EBC Redstuff Ceramic is the pad to choose.

EBC Brakes DP31986C Redstuff Ceramic Low Dust Brake Pad Review

When I bought these pads a few months back, I went with EBC because I had used them in previous Audi's that I've owned as well as my Mitsubishi Evolution IX and they were great stopping pads, much better than stock. And on my 2010 Audi A4 quattro, these pads did not disappoint in that department. They have excellent initial "bite" that's better than the stock metallic 2010 OEM Audi pads, plus they don't feel soft like most aftermarket Ceramic pads or even the new ceramic OEM Audi pads. (they changed them in 2011 i believe)

Where I have been disappointed in these pads is the claim that they are "low dust". These pads are only slightly less dirty than the original "filthy" Audi OEM pads, and are probably on par with the newer Audi OEM ceramic pads. I've read claims that these pads are dramatically better than both old and new OEM pads in terms of dust, which I say is patently untrue.

When it comes to brake pads, there is no Holy Grail. It is always a give/take scenario. In order to get better stopping power, you always give up a little when it comes to brake dust. And vice versa.

I would also like to note that these pads are not really a true ceramic pad. They are actually a Kevlar Fiber pad that is enhanced with ceramic particles. This is why these pads have outstanding initial bite when braking is applied as well as amazing brake fade resistance.

To everyone buying these pads. READ THE BED-IN INSTRUCTIONS!!! If you fail to follow the instructions which clearly state that it can take up to 1000 miles for the pad to be fully conformed to the rotor face, and during that time period you MUST go easy on your pads. So no track days, driving fast up to red lights and braking hard, or aggressive driving in general. Doing any of these things will cause them to wear unevenly and chances are they will be noisy. I have not heard a sound from these pads after 3,000 miles because I followed the instructions.

I also recommend that once you've properly bedded in your pads, take your car out on a section of road where you won't go causing an accident, run the thing up to 60-80mph and put brake pedal to the floor. Some of you may laugh, but I'm serious. These pads stop MUCH better than the stock pads. I made the mistake of not doing this and had to panic brake on the 405 freeway in LA from 70mph and slightly swerve to avoid clipping a downed motorcycle rider and while these pads did an amazing job, the rear end of my car got a little wiggley, making the event a little more stressful than it should have been. This movement of the rear end was not due to these brakes exclusively. It was my misjudgement when braking from high speed of slightly turning the wheel. The first thing they teach you in racing schools is that uncontrolled deceleration is the #1 cause of accidents, on the street and on the track. And if people like me who raced SCCA for half a decade can make mistakes that were amplified by not properly brake testing the new pads first... anyone can. So for your own safety, make sure you brake test them hard at least once after they're bedded in.

Here are a few tips regarding pad selection...

Ceramic Brake Pads

Don't let their name fool you—ceramic pads aren't made from the same stuff as fine china teacups. Not a chance. They're actually created from a blend of super-strong ceramic and copper fiber, and they represent the latest generation of brake pad technology. Here's a quick breakdown of their pros and cons:

Pros:

They're quieter than metallic pads.
They dissipate heat better for less brake fade.
They create less dust, and the dust itself is lighter in color.
They're gentler on brake rotors.

Cons:

They're not as aggressive as metallic pads.
They're not recommended for racing or heavy-duty towing.
They're generally more expensive than comparable metallic pads.

Metallic Brake Pads

As their name implies, metallic pads are made with metal fibers in the braking compound…and, they're fond of listening to Cinderella while you drive. So, dust off your copy of Night Songs, tease your hair in the air, and check out the pros and cons of metallic brake pads:

Pros:

They're more aggressive than ceramic pads.
They pull heat away from the rotor for cooler braking.
They're available in track-ready and heavy-duty towing formulations.
They're relatively less expensive than comparable ceramic pads.

Cons:

They're louder than ceramic pads.
They generate more dust that's black and grimy.
They're more abrasive and wear through disc brakes and faster.
