ACDelco 217-3349 Throttle Control Actuator Review

For well over a year, I have experienced a situation where rpm drops too fast when coasting, such as when applying the clutch to brake, at times, usually while at a stop light or stopping during warm up, the idle drops to 500rpm for about a second and then quickly recovers to 750rpm. This issue caused no check engine lights or codes to be stored, but I knew from experience that such idle pattern is not normal, considering this truck has 66k miles on it. Learning how the throttle by wire design works, I learned that the two primary inputs the computer uses to determine idle speed is Mass Airflow Sensor and throttle position. On older designs, the throttle position switch can be removed individually, but on Colorado's the TPS is built in to the throttle body. Reading tutorials from Colorado enthusiasts, I tried cleaning the MAF and the throttle body but it did no good. Replacing the MAF made a significant improvement to idle stability, but the situation where idle would drop too fast persisted. Locally, the throttle body is horribly expensive, over $200, catching this under $70 was well worth the try. This part is a genuine AC Delco replacement, not aftermarket. Installation is beyond simple, remove the air duct, remove the air resonator with a 10mm socket, remove three vacuum lines from the resonator and remove the throttle fastening bolts with the same 10mm socket, disconnect the fuel vapor suction tube, the clip can be loosened with your fingernail. The most difficult part was removing the 8 pin TCA connector, it breaks easily, but it can be removed by lifting the retainer clip with a small flat screw driver. installed a new throttle gasket, torqued mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs in a cross pattern as per alldata service manual. once installed, let the truck idle for 5 minutes, and then drove on the high way, exited highway and let idle five minutes again, this is necessary so the computer relearns the parameters of the new TCA. This solved the problem, Idle is rock solid at 750 rpm, idle drops to 1100 rpm when coasting and only drops to 750 under 10mph, no longer does the idle drop to 500. Even the engine seems to have less vibration at all speed ranges. The lesson I learned is that even if there is no check engine light on, which is what the dealer looks for, the TCA can be out of specs, and at this price, it is well worth replacing if cleaning the original does not work. My advice to anyone considering this service, is to replace the MAF first, then replace the TCA if needed. Buy a throttle body gasket, as the replacement TCA does not include a new one. You will need a torque wrench that is calibrated to pound inches, as the TCA mounts to a plastic manifold, and over-torquing can damage the manifold. You may also consider purchasing the actual tool used to remove the electrical connector, as the connector itself can be even more expensive than the TCA if you damage it, but if you are careful with a mini flat screw driver, you can lift the retainer clip and remove the plug with ease. All in all, this throttle control actuator was an excellent value, and I saved a ton of money on not having to go back to the dealership.
