NEW UNITY 11592 STRUT ASSEMBLY RIGHT FRONT (REPL. MONROE 171426) Review

I had replaced the brakes and rotors all around on our 2002 Altima (99,500 miles) and in the process decided to replace the struts. This was a first for me to change out struts and I was concerned about using a spring compressor. I found these complete assemblies online and decided to replace everything rather than just the strut itself. These struts (RF and LF) arrived the day after I ordered them in the original manufacturer packaging. After getting the front end up on the jack stands and the wheels off, I used the old liquid wrench and let it sit a while before trying to get the lower nuts loose on the steering knuckle assembly. I tried an impact wrench (1/2 inch) to loosen the nuts but still needed a cheater bar to get the lower bolts loose on the steering knuckle assembly. Once I got all the bolts off, had to adjust the top a bit to line up the studs with the holes in the upper strut tower of the car body. The instructions aren't much with these struts (no torque specs) but I had the service manual for that so it wasn't a problem. If you are doing this alone as I was, it was easier to attach the lower section to the wheel and slowly raise the strut in place using a small alligator jack. I had to adjust the bracket that held the brake line a bit by bending it down as it wasn't quite the same as the original struts and stretched the line into the caliber a little more that I liked. One strut boot was not secured at the bottom with a zip tie, but that was easily corrected before I put the struts on the car. The car looked a bit high in the front when comparing the front and rear wheel clearances in the wheel wells, but instructions said the springs would make the car look that way until they were on the vehicle a while. Had the front aligned after installing the struts and the place thought the front was high for the car (that the struts were not the correct ones for the Altima), however they did not have any problems aligning the car (4 wheel alignment was done). I drove it to work the next day to check everything and left on a 1800 mile road trip a few days later. No problems on the trip at all. Car drove great and everything seemed fine. This was by far the easiest way to replace the struts. The whole job took about 3 or 4 hours in a cold garage without heat. It may not take someone else as long, but I go slow to make sure I don't miss anything or forget to torque a bolt. Replacing the whole assembly saves time and you don't have to fight with spring compressors.
