Universal Air Condition CO10663AC New A/C Compressor and Clutch Review

I'm one of those unfortunates who has a '02 Honda CR-V and whose AC system failed. Depending on who you believe, this is either a rare occurence or the subject of a class action lawsuit. Doesn't matter to me, I just had to repair my AC system for a car long out of warranty.

The product shipped quickly and was well packaged; it came out of Texas and I suppose they are the importers. I was pleased to see the compressor is shipped filled with oil, just one less thing to worry about.

The compressor fit perfectly and ran perfectly at start up. I've only had it for a few weeks so this is early and if anything bad happens, I'll update this review.

The only initial concern I had was the picture, as shown, appeared to me to have the pulley on the wrong side of the compressor for my vehicle. I double checked the fitment on the Amazon website before ordering and it said it fit my car so I took a chance. I assume that I'm worng about the picture, I wouldn't worry about it. It fit perfectly and it appears IDENTICAL to the Honda unit.

I did all the work on my AC system by myself, learned everything the hard way but made no serious mistakes. I was a bit uneasy about buying such an inexpensive compressor but my current view is why do other people charge so much for a compressor that's just a simple air pump? We're not talking Space Shuttle technology here.

When I went to the Honda dealer for a price quote on a brand new AC compressor, I just laughed. Worst case, if this compressor only lasts me two seasons and I buy and install another one, I'm STILL 'way ahead of the game.

Just be sure to have the correct amount of PAG oil in your system before you button it back up. I suppose an HVAC tech would roll his eyes at my next comment but I'd rather have a bit more oil in the system and a bit less refrigerant to keep me on the safe side. Yes, I use the correct gauges to fill the system.

This is an addendum in Spring '11. The compressor worked fine for the entire season last year. I did have another problem which had nothing to do with the compressor but related to my inexperience. I had to replace the front condenser/drier b/c it was plugged. So I guess the real problem was pressure built up on the high side, causing the pump to fail. I also forgot to add in that the total cost of my repair included a brand new 25u vacuum pump from Harbor Freight. I put that on the system, let it run for a half hour and the system has worked fine. I did add a leak stop to the refrigerant as a precaution. As it turns out the condenser on our SubZero (I could rant for hours about that turkey) had to be replaced and I watched the tech pretty closely. I was surprised to see he used R134a, same as the car. All my equipment will work for household refrigeration, apparently.

Off topic, the real secret to increasing the longevity of your SubZero is to add a secondary cooling fan in the BACK of the cabinet near the freezer compressor. The design is biased toward quietness and therefore cooling of the components is inadequate. It's easy to cut another fan (I put in two) into the OEM wiring harness, the noise level is the same AND you can now feel heat exhausting through the front grate. Manufacturers could give a rat's patoot about longevity...I don't care what they say about design specs, if machines run cooler, they run longer. Period.

As an update, this is the fall of '11 and the compressor worked flawlessly throughout the summer. A very good purchase for me. As it turns out, I traded the CR-V a few months ago so adios amigo. AND I just got a letter in the mail which said something about a settlement on a class action suit about Honda AC compressors or something like that. Not that interested anymore but it WAS a good experience.
