My belt had popped off on a rainy day for no good reason (belt still in pretty good shape). I then read lots of horror stories online about this problem. People were saying this kit would solve the problem. I ordered one from Rock Auto, but later discovered it's a little cheaper at Amazon.

The kit replaces the belt with one that is grooved on both sides. It also replaces the smooth idler and tensioner pulleys with grooved ones (complete new tensioner is provided). The idea is that the double-sided belt will not slip off the grooved pulleys. The smooth water pump pulley is not replaced, but it is so close to two grooved pulleys that the belt can't slip off.

Installation is a little challenging. The idler pulley is pretty easy, but keep checking to make sure the bolt is properly centered in the pulley as you tighten the bolt. The tensioner is harder because the nut holding it on is hard to reach. I ended up removing an angle bracket on the back of the power steering pump so I could see and reach the tensioner nut. You'd better have a socket set with a few extensions and a swivel joint because there's not much room to work. Make sure the tensioner is properly oriented so it drops into position and can't rotate.

Installing the belt is also kind of difficult. If you don't remember how to route the belt, you can find a diagram on the Gates web site [...] They don't give you a lot of room to rotate the tensioner, so you may need a special tool. I used a 15mm combination wrench with the box end on the pulley bolt and a 1/2" drive ratchet in the open end of the 15mm combination wrench. That gave me barely enough room to move the tensioner enough. I put the belt over the alternator pulley last, but that may not be the easiest way to do it. Carefully check to be sure the belt is properly seated in all the pulleys; I had to recenter the belt in the new idler pulley. Install the included sticker, so you will know what belt to buy in the future.

I haven't driven very far yet, but it looks like the belt cannot possibly slip off unless the tensioner breaks. It also seems quieter than before. Chrysler should have done something like this themselves, originally or as a recall. Don't risk being stranded or worse (suddenly losing power steering could be very dangerous). This kit should put an end to the belt-jumping issue.
